STATION HISTORY

The Porirua Volunteer Fire Brigade was started on the 26th of October 1950 as an auxiliary of the Tawa Flat Volunteer Fire Brigade. The first station was a small building alongside fire-fighter R.D. Moffat's butchery.

Alan Melville, the first Superintendent, supplied the first appliance, an elderly Model A. Newer appliances followed - a converted 1935 fruit truck, nicknamed the 'Banana Wagon', and then, in 1955 Porirua's first new vehicle, a Bedford.

When the Mungavin Avenue station opened in 1962, operational control for the district shifted to Porirua, whose Fire Board then assumed control of Tawa and Titahi Bay. The new station was extended in 1964-1965. In 1973 Porirua took over the Plimmerton Volunteer Fire Brigade.
